Lailatul Qadr:
It is translated as The Night of Power or Destiny. “Al Qadr” among other things denotes power, ability, authority, esteem,
etc. This is the Blessed Night on which Allah revealed the Quran for the first time to the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) as the
Divine Being Himself points out in “Surat Al Qadr”. This is the Night on which Allah decrees amnesty from the punishment
of Hell for the greatest number of people throughout the year from this Umma.
Allah has thus made it superior to a thousand
months, which is more than 84 years. A single good deed: devotional act, therefore, on this Night gets the reward of a
lifetime of good deeds. This is why the Muslim is encouraged to spend the Night in Prayer and supplication, recitation
of the Quran and similar devotional acts and of course also remembering the poor and needy in charity and kindness. The
exact date of Lailatul Qadr however remains hidden to people by the Divine Wisdom of Allah.
The Prophet (S.A.W.) has
however, hinted that it occurs during the last ten nights of Ramadhaan; those with odd numbers to be more precise,
(i.e. the nights occurring before the 21st , 23rd , 25th , 27th and 29th days of Ramadhaan respectively). The best thing
therefore, in order to gain the full blessings of Ramadhaan and Lailatul Qadr is to do as the Prophet himself used to do.
Mother Aisha (R.A.) has said that the Prophet (S.A.W.) used to engage himself in devotional acts in Ramadhaan more than
any other time in the year and during the last ten of Ramadhaan more than any other time. That is because this is the
period of salvation from the Fire and because of Lailatul Qadr which is the Greatest Night of the year.

Fasting linguistically simply means to abstain from something. The Shar’i (Islamic; legal) meaning however, is to abstain from food, drink and intimate relations (as between spouses) from the rise of dawn to sunset with the proper intension.
2. Position of Sawm:
Fasting is of great importance in Islam. Hence Allah has made it one of the Five Pillars of the Religion. It is therefore, obligatory in the month of Ramadhaan with its own special conditions.
3. Conditions for the Obligation of Sawm:
For fasting to be obligatory on a person three basic conditions must be fulfilled.
• Islam: since fasting is not obligatory on a non-Muslim.
• Maturity (Responsibility): by this it is meant the Muslim should be adult and sane of mind.
• Ability; physical and Shar’i: by physical ability it is meant one who is not disabled from fasting by an incurable illness and by Shar’i it is meant one who is not legally inhibited form fasting such as a woman in menstruation of post-natal bleeding.
4. Conditions for the Acceptability of Sawm:
For fasting to be sound and acceptable the conditions must also be fulfilled:
• Islam: hence the fasting of a disbeliever cannot be acceptable.
• Sanity and Maturity: hence the fasting of a mentally deranged person or a minor cannot be acceptable for the lack of proper intension. The fasting of a child however, who has reached the age of discernment is acceptable.
• Freedom from Inhibitions to Fasting: these are menstruation, post-natal hemorrhage, fainting or insanity that last the whole day.
5. The Obligations of Sawm: these are two:
,
• The Intension: By this it is meant to declare in your heart (i.e. prepare yourself mentally) to fast for the month of Ramadhaan. This must be done before FAJR of the first day of Ramadhaan. According to the Juristic School of Imam Malik it is enough to make this intension of fasting the whole month on the first night before the beginning of Fasting. Others repeat it every night of Ramadhaan.
• Abstention from everything that breaks the Fast for the whole duration of the day.
6. Ethics of Sawm:
• Hastening the Iftar (breaking of Fast): It is an established Sunna of the Prophet (S.A.W.) to break the fast immediately after sunset. It is also recommended to break the Fast with dates or with a glass of water before anything else.
• As-Suhoor (Pre-dawn meal): This is done by at least eating something or drinking a little right before Fajr. The Prophet (S.A.W.) has said, “Eat Suhoor as there is a blessing in Suhoor.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
• Delaying the Suhoor: This is to eat Suhoor up to just a few minutes before Fajr. The Prophet (S.A.W.) has said, “My Umma shall be at peace for as long as they hasten the Iftar and delay the Suhoor.” (Ahmad)
• Shunning Indecent Speech: The fasting Muslim should especially avoid abusive speech, lying, backbiting, malicious gossip, etc. The Prophet (S.A.W.) has said, “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it then Allah has no need for them to give up their food and drink.” (All Six except Muslim)
• Charitability, Quran Recitation and E’etikaf (seclusion in the Masjid for worship and devotion especially in the last ten days and nights of Ramadhaan as the Prophet (S.A.W.) used to do).

ARE WE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN ISLAM???
Parents should send their children to a Madrasa to give the child guidance to be a good Muslim.
They should make sure the child knows how to read the Qur’an well and has good knowledge of Islam.
A child should develop a thirst for knowledge through listening, observing, reading and interacting with others.
Children should be taught how to read the holy Qur’an and Hadith at an early age so that they
develop the love for it when they’re older. They should be taught good morals, good characters,
good Islamic knowledge and proper Islamic behavior.
Allah has not only given parents responsibilities but He has given them rights as well. He has given them the right of disciplining or punishing their children when they do something wrong. Parents have the right to punish their boys who are ten years and older if they don’t read their salah at the appropriate times. When a child misbehaves, a parent should first teach and make sure the child understands that what they did was wrong and if the child doesn’t understand and misbehaves again parents have the right to punish the child.

Rajab An Important spiritual month
Rajab marks the beginning of the spiritual season of every believer ending with the end of the fasting month of
Ramadan with the Eid Al Fitr. These three months are unmatched in their importance.
Praise be to the Almighty and thanks to Him for granting us yet another opportunity to cleanse ourselves of our sins and
oversights.
The Holy Prophet (SAW) has said:
“ Rajab is a great month of Allah, unmatched by any other month in the respect and significance (accorded to it); war with the infidels during this month is prohibited; Verily, Rajab is Allah’s month, Sha’aban my month and Ramadan the month of my Ummah; whosoever fasts a day in the month of Rajab will be granted the great reward of Ridwan (an angel in heaven); the wrath of Allah shall be distanced and a door of the Hell shall be closed.”
Fasting is one of the most recommended acts during this spiritual season. It becomes Wajib during the month of Ramadan, but is highly recommended during the months of Rajab and Sha’baan. As will be noted from the Hadith above and others to follow, fasting, be it for only one day during these months, is rewarded with untold bounties.
Hadrat Salmaan Farsi narrates that the Final messenger of Allah (SAW) said that there is a day in the month of Rajab on which if a person fasts and does Qiyaamul Lail (night vigil ) on that night, he will receive rewards like a person who fasts for 100 years and does Qiyaamul Lail for nights of 100 years. This night is the night of the 27th (Rajab) and the day of the 27th (Rajab). This is the day on which Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was appointed to Messengerhood, (Ghuniyatut Talibeen, Tarteeb Shareef page 781).
Imam Kazim(as) is reprted to have said "Rajab is (the name of) a River inparadise that is whiter than milk & sweeter than honey.Allah will allow one to drink from this river if he fasts for even one day in this month.
It is also a month of seeking forgiveness more than usual as Allah is forgiving & merciful during this month
ULTIMATUM FOR SUPREME ISLAMIC COUNCIL OF GAMBIA
President Jammeh has called on the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) to put its house in order and advanced a one week (with effect from last week Thursday) ultimatum for it to regulate the apparent Islamic differences in the country.

The rule about breaking ones fast during the month of Ramadan or not fasting at all
Abu Hurairah reported that a man broke the fast in Ramadan (Delibrately). The messenger
if allah instructed him to atone for this by setting a slave free or to fast
two continuous months or to feed sixty poor persons.(muslim)
Sexual intercourse during the period of fast (Dawn to sun set) not
only invalidates the fast but involves an additional penalty as well.
The penalty is to set a slave free. If this is not available or possible
one must fast an additional period of 60 continuous days. If one is not
able to,then he must feed sixty poor persons one average meal each
The Prophet (S.A.W) said:
Whoever breaks the fast of one day of Ramadan,
without a valid excuse or (not due to) illness, fasting forever
will not make up for it(ie,the missed day) even if he/she did fast it" (Al-Bukhari)
THE QURAN AND FASTING
Sura(the cow verse 183-186)
O believers, fasting is decreed for you as it was decreed for those before you,
perchance you will guard yourself against evil. Fast a certain number of days
but if any one of you is ill or on a journey let them fast a similar number of
days later on; and for those that find it extremely difficult to fast, there
is a ranson;the feeding of a poor man. He that does good of his own account
shall be rewarded; but to fast is better for you, if you but knew it.
The month of Ramadhan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, a book of
guidance with proofs of guidance distinguishing right from wrong. Therefore
whoever of you is well in that month.let him fast. But he who is ill or on a journey
shall fast similar number of days later on.
DON'T DELAY GIVING IN CHARITY
Forwarded by Imam Pa Ebou Jeng of Raleigh
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once had several coins that he asked his wife to distribute in charity. But due to the Prophet's illness at the time, she did not have an opportunity to give out the coins. When the Prophet learned of this, he asked for the coins, placed them in his hand, and then said: "What would God's Prophet think if he were to meet God, who is Great and Glorious, while (still) possessing these?" - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 586
The Prophet also said: "Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHARITY
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 604
The Prophet also said: "Every act of goodness is charity." - Sahih Muslim, Hadith 496
EVERY MUSLIM MUST GIVE IN CHARITY
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The people then asked: "(But what) if someone has nothing to give, what should he do?" The Prophet replied: "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked: "If he cannot find even that?" He replied: "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked: "If he cannot do (even) that?" The Prophet said finally: "Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds, and that will be regarded as charitable deeds." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith 524
SMILING IS CHARITY
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Charity is prescribed for each descendant of Adam every day the sun rises." He was then asked: "From what do we give charity every day?" The Prophet answered: "The doors of goodness are many...enjoining good, forbidding evil, removing harm from the road, listening to the deaf, leading the blind, guiding one to the object of his need, hurrying with the strength of one's legs to one in sorrow who is asking for help, and supporting the feeble with the strength of one's arms--all of these are charity prescribed for you." He also said: "Your smile for your brother is charity." - Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 98
BEST FORM OF CHARITY
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Shall I guide you to the best (form of) charity? It is to provide for your daughter when she (returns) to you (because of divorce or other circumstances) and has no one but you to provide for her." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1296

Marriage in Islam
Those who are able to shoulder the responsibilities of marriage are urged by God to get married.
Marriage is entered into by a contract of offer and acceptance drawn by mutual consent of the
bridegroom or his representative and the guardian or representative of the bride in the presence
of two witness. Marriage is usually contracted in a ceremony gathering.
To dowry, which must according to sunna be a reasonable ,belongs to the wife. The wife also has the right
to get it all before the marriage is consummated. However, a part of it may be deferred and paid later.
In this case the deferred part becomes a debt which the wife get upon divorce or upon the husband`s death.
Incase of the wife`s death, the unpaid path goes to her heirs.
In certain circumstances a man can have four wives at the same time provided he is just dealing with them.
while the sunnites consider mut`a or temporary marriage as illegal, the shiites practice it. The marriage
of the muhallil(who temporarily marries a divorced wife to make it possible for her to go
back to her husband) is illegal because it is temporary.

TOBASKI
ISLAM IN THE GAMBIA
Islam is the majority religion of The Gambia, with around 90% of the population being Muslims. However, some popular religions practices diverge from mainstream Islam, with a system of marabout societies being very common. There is no Shi'ite following in the country, but there is a small Ahmadiyya community.
The trade across the Sahara was carried out by Arab and Berber merchants from North West Africa. They were Muslims: they introduced their religion and Islamic culture into the places in West Africa where they traded . Muslim Berbers from Mauritania brought Islam to The Gambia and other areas south of Senegal. Many local. Rulers and elders were converted and introduced Islamic ideas and laws to their people.

Controlling The Tongue
Among Allah's blessings upon man is that He made him a thoughtful and sane being and created a tongue for him... The Messenger of Allah [s] says: "Blessed is the man who speaks good and is triumphant; or keeps silent in the face of evil and is secure".[11] Among Allah's blessings upon man is that He made him a thoughtful and sane being and created a tongue for him. He made him able to utter sounds and clarify what he wants through the words which he speaks. He has only to speak to let people know what he wants.
Thus, we should thank Allah for the blessings which He bestowed upon us. We should use our speech in useful ways; not to speak but goodness. For example, if we are in a meeting or a gathering and want to speak with people, or any discussion comes up then we should first think what we want to say and choose which words to use. If we can offer useful counsel to people or offer advice, we should speak in such a way to make others want to listen.
Hence your words will be acceptable to Allah and the people because your speech is beneficial in guiding towards goodness or reconciling people, or teaching useful knowledge, and will increase the love of people to each other.
If we say a word of goodness we will get Allah's reward and the love and respect of the people and so we will be triumphant. As our glorious Prophet Muhammad [s] says: If man is not able to say something useful, he should keep silent from bad words and his silence will keep him far from Allah's wrath and from the harm which might befall him as a result of saying bad words. Whoever does evil deeds to people, people will surely confront him with evil too.
And certainly, if you speak bad words it may cause you problems and harm and make you regret and wish you had kept silent and had not spoken.
Consequently, our Holy Prophet Muhammad [s] educates us with good manners saying: Either you speak a useful and good word, or be silent which is better for you than speaking evil words.
In Summary Among the best characteristics of a Muslim is to speak only the words of goodness and reconciliation. It is better to remain silent if you cannot speak the word of goodness.Whoever does not keep a check on his tongue will regret it.For those who do good is good (reward) and even more than that.
